Analysis, diagnosis and optimisation of physical-asset operation

The problem

In many structural or mechanical failures it is impossible to determine the root cause by only reviewing operation, maintenance or inspection history. It is also complex to identify construction or design aspects responsible for the failure or poor performance.

To identify the causes, the equipment must be subjected—virtually or experimentally—to the different operating conditions it has encountered over its life, and the effects on its current mechanical or structural condition must be measured. Doing this in the field is costly and impractical, so numerical simulation is used to model behaviour under operating or redesign conditions, allowing different hypotheses to be tested at low cost.

However, for reliable results the simulation must be based on a numerical model that accurately represents the asset’s physical behaviour, including geometry and material properties, and—crucially—is driven by real operating conditions such as forces, temperatures, flows, chemical reactions and displacements, known only through measurement in practice.

The solution

Employ highly trained personnel with experience building complex models of physical assets used in industries such as mining, aerospace, space, defence and transport. Use modern numerical modelling tools (e.g., FEM and CFD), on-site measurement of operating conditions, and measurements on the asset under analysis and diagnosis to validate simulation results.

CADETECH maintains a team of postgraduate engineers with professional experience dedicated to analysis, diagnosis and optimisation of assets using numerical models, plus a field team with the required instrumentation to obtain real operating conditions and to validate model results.

With this team and experience, CADETECH can both diagnose an asset’s root cause of failure and propose modifications to optimise its operation or to design new equipment.
